The Adoption Process

With proper training our horses can have long, rewarding careers in a multitude of disciplines after their race careers. We look forward to seeing them as hunter/jumpers, eventers, barrel racers, trail riders, 4H horses, and pasture pals. No matter their job, a HART horse is ready to be your next heart horse!

Step 1 - Complete an Adoption Questionnaire

Once you’ve completed an adoption questionnaire, our adoption committee will review and begin to contact the references provided.

Step 2 - Submit the Application Fee

A non-refundable application processing fee is required at the time of submission. Use the link provided to submit.

Step 3 - Review the Adoption Agreement

Familiarize yourself with the terms and conditions of the adoption agreement.

Step 4 - Choosing a Horse

All of our adoptable horses are listed on our website. Our trainer can answer questions about their personalities, experience under saddle since being restarted, and what medical care they may have received as part of their rehabilitation. If you work with a trainer, we encourage you to include your trainer in your selection process. Additionally, although we work closely with our veterinarian and will provide whatever information we can, you are welcome and encouraged to perform a pre-purchase exam (PPE) with your own vet.

Step 5 - Sign & Pay

Once you have found your next horse, you will complete the adoption agreements and submit your final payment. You will be responsible for arranging transportation of your horse to its new location. We do not provide training or boarding of horses after their adoption.

Step 6 - Keep in Touch!

Adopters are required to send updates at regular intervals per their adoption agreements, but we also encourage them to join our Alumni Group on Facebook to share candid stories with other HART Alumni, as well as previous owners, trainers, and jockeys who are interested in keeping in touch.
